Three Democratic senators said in a letter to the Federal Reserve that it was time to cut interest rates, adding that the Fed should abandon its 2 percent inflation target. The senators argued that a high interest rate environment designed to keep inflation at bay exacerbated the inflation problem by driving up the cost of housing, construction and auto insurance, and risked pushing the economy into recession that would "push thousands of American workers out of work".
